God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.

The original serenity prayer is longer than the "AA" or Alcoholics Anonymous version, which is shortened a bit. AA Serenity Prayer.  Serenity Prayer Plaque Bill Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, utilized the serenity prayer as the "aa serenity prayer" to encourage people with alcohol addictions to ask God's help in accepting what they are, while at the same time, granting them courage to change the things the can. In another words, Bill felt that all Alcoholics were able, with God's help, to rid their dependence on alcohol while accepting that fact of the disease that could be arrested. The version referred in AA publications is simply the first paragraph of the prayer and not a "modified" version. Nearly all 12 step programs for various addictions utilize the Serenity Prayer as the central profession of hope that the can overcome their addictions.
